How to write Hazard Statements
I had already explained about the types of Hazard statements in my previous post.
Today I am going to explain how to write those statements.
There are certain standard rules which many of the industries follow.
The basic rules of the Hazard statement is the color codes.
The color codes of Warning, Caution and Notice slightly varies from industries to industries.
The second rule is the position of the Hazard statements in the manual.
As we know that these Hazard statements are mostly used in the instructional manuals (OM, MM & SM).
As per the standard, Warning and Caution should be placed before the procedure/steps starts where you feel there is a potential risk is evolve.
Notice can be placed any where on the procedure.
Either before or after the procedure.
Start a warning or caution with a simple and clear command.
Example:
DO NOT GET ENGINE OIL ON YOUR SKIN. THIS OIL IS POISONOUS. IT CAN GO THROUGH YOUR SKIN AND INTO YOUR BODY.
Be specific in a warning or caution.
Example:
MAKE SURE THAT THE OXYGEN TUBES ARE FULLY CLEAN. THIS WILL HELP TO PREVENT CONTAMINATION AND EXPLOSIONS.
If necessary, add a brief explanation to a warning or caution to give a clear idea of the possible risk.
Example:
BEFORE YOU OPEN THE ENGINE COWLING, MAKE SURE THAT YOU ENGAGE THE COWLING LOCK. IF THE LOCK IS NOT ENGAGED, DAMAGE TO THE STRUCTURE CAN OCCUR.
Identify your command correctly as a warning or caution.
Example:
MAKE SURE THAT THE OXYGEN TUBES ARE FULLY CLEAN. THIS WILL HELP TO PREVENT CONTAMINATION AND EXPLOSIONS.
If the condition is necessary before the technician continues, put the condition first in the warning or caution.
Example:
BEFORE YOU OPEN THE CIRCUIT BREAKERS, MAKE SURE THAT THE EMERGENCY POWER AND LIGHT SWITCHES ARE IN THE “OFF” POSITION. THIS WILL HELP TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO THE EQUIPMENT.
Write notice so that you give information only.
Example:
Make sure that the engine controls operate correctly.
