As a technical writer, many times we are asked to conduct training or knowledge transfer sessions for the new comers and other audience .
To make the session interactive, we should manage our Audience. There are few tips which can help us to manage our Audience during any session.
- Start the session with an interactive opening using questions, asking for a show of hands, etc.
- Tell participants to introduce themselves.
- Tell participants to write down their questions before you start the session.
- Conduct a paper or online survey prior to session to engage them in thinking before they arrive.
- Emphasis on benefits to the audience and inform them to confirm the benefits are important to them.
- Make an interactive session by asking questions to audience during the presentation.
- Welcome humor that happens.
- Present your slides with pictures you have taken of people, product, or locations.
- Show short video clips to hear from clients, experts, or leaders.
- Make a “Round Robin” discussion to hear from everyone, especially when brainstorming or seeking opinions. Cheer everyone to take a turn, but allow them to “pass” if they don’t have an idea.
- Tell the listeners to discuss concerns or topics with one another or at tables.
- Say a story to illustrate your points. May be a disaster or a success; stories are engaging.
- Make your presentation like a story with a problem, actions to take, and solution.
- Request listeners to guess certain facts or data or leave blanks on your slides and ask them to fill in the missing words or numbers.
- Established a demonstration that audience members participate in.
- Request for volunteers to write on a flip chart, track the time, or record action items.
- Provide a quiz or a test, either at the beginning or end. Make sure that it is fun, not threatening.
- Provide practice or application opportunities.
- Involve them physically by asking them to stand, raise hands, clap, etc.
- Use slides only as reference; the audience and you come before the slides
